The History of Etch Printing
Etch printing and etching Printing Presses can trace their roots back to the 1500's where the method of etching was used to brighten armour and weapons like swords and cannons. The earliest examples of this were made in Germany where there are examples on view in the genuine Armeria of Madrid. The same person Daniel Hopfer who made these early etchings is said to have been one of the first to use etching mixed with the new to Europe printing process.
These early etch printing examples were made using iron as the plate making material and acid to form the etch lines. It is assumed that around this time the Italians started to use etching and are alleged to be first to use copper as the plate material.
There were many famous and celebrated artists over time that have exploited the etching printing press to excellent effect for instance Rembrandt. Who is alleged to have stopped using engraving totally to work on his etchings and is understood to have produced over 300 hundred etchings.
Over the following couple of hundred year’s acid was still used though thankfully there are choices to this in use today. The material used for the plates has naturally modified over time with some being attempted across the years. Today the bulk of etching printers use either copper, zinc or steel all these have their own unique properties and can produce different results. Though many etching printers would rather use copper, today though the expense of the raw materials can be prohibitive to some and many use steel with sufficient results.
The presses used for this have also developed over time and manifestly the materials employed in the development of them. Early presses would be screw down type presses as developed by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid 1400's. These presses are known for the development and expansion of printing from a cottage industry to more main line this style of press was in relentless use for over three hundred years.
It was actually the early 1800's when the commercial revolution started to speed things up the Gutenberg press was under threat from newly developing mechanised presses that were being developed in London. These monstrous machines were steam powered and enormously sped up the entire printmaking industry. Naturally over time the printing industry has changed significantly going from being a slow process to printing thousands of pages an hour with modern computerised printing machines.
All that perhaps hunky dory for the gigantic corporations this doesn't actually help the artist's out there. While many folks still employ a screw down type Gutenberg etching press they can be restrictive in particular the dimensions of print that they can produce. The other choice is to employ a hand etching press design which uses a large roller at the top which applies continued and even pressure to the plate and paper. This still can be limiting but a lot less than the Gutenberg type etching presses.

the acid is not etching into my copper plate ?
we were told by my teacher that we should not leave it in there for more than 2 hours and it about to go over it . is the acid weak what is the problem ?
if you are using hydrochloric acid then thats the problem, copper doesnt react with hydrochloric acid
