how many layers of gesso?
I am painting an antique shelf (with brackets removed - the surface of the shelf will be the "canvas" for the painting) with oil paints. I liked the nicks and dents and rich color of the stained wood (of which I'm leaving a boarder as a natural frame). Question: the wood is fairly dark, and I have applied two (moderately thin) coats of gesso. Do you think that is enough? Has anyone done this? Will the pre-stained surface be a problem down the road if I stick to two coats of gesso? I sanded the stained wood before the first application of gesso, and then I sanded again after the first layer. More coats or not?
It all depends on what kind or what type of paint you are using.If you are thinking of using oil paints then give it a couple more coats if you are using acrylics then you are good to go now.
