painting a brass water pipe?
I have an old victorian toilet with the tank mounted on the wall and pull chain, the connecting pipe from the tank to bowl is brass. I would like to update my bathroom to Chrome and paint the pipe. Can you recommend the proper process for painting/etching brass.
I use a product by Zinsser (which is a rustoleum company) called B.I.N.
It will stick to anything and becomes a bonding coat.
You need to start by sanding the pipe a little bit to scuff it up.
Then you dust it off to remove any dust, etc. from the sanding.
Then you use a cheap disposable brush to prime the pipe with the B.I.N.
It is alcohol based and smells awful but it dries quickly. I believe you can coat it with paint in 30-45 minutes but just read the directions.
Once it is cured just paint with whatever type of paint you like. I prefer Benjamin Moore but any high quality paint will work just fine.
You need an extremely small amount of B.I.N. to prime a pipe. A quart is perfectly fine.
