Modern Wine Decanter As the Perfect Collectible Item
For a wine decanter to be a collectible item it needs to have a couple of special properties, including it being useful, distinctive, beautiful, artistic, varied, stylish and a favorite with many people.
First of all it should be useful as it should serve the purpose of decanting wine and pouring it into glasses before drinking. It should also be artistic and varied, which means it should not have qualities of being mass produced. Each piece should be similar, yet different from each other.
A collector loves his or her pieces to be visually very appealing, since usually the decanters end up displayed behind glass doors in cabinets for everybody to enjoy. Guests are usually very attracted to a beautiful wine decanter collection in the house of a well known crystal barware collector.
While the traditional decanters have a typical shape and form - such as the well known ship or duck shape - such as the well known Peugeot Prestige duck decanter, the modern wine decanter goes beyond this tradition by offering several variations on the starting theme. For example you will find decanters with or without stoppers, with or without handles and even the stoppers can be of several different materials, such as crystal, metal, hard plastic (not so favored by collectors), pewter and several others.
Nowadays you can also find wine decanter sets of several sizes, going beyond what was offered years ago. You will find an 18oz, 20oz, 22 oz and even 26oz decanter. There are even huge decanters that can hold up to 12 bottles of wine or other alcoholic drinks in them.
Finally it is well known that the lead crystal decanter can have health dangers for people who like to store their wine in decanters. This is why traditionally decanters made of lead crystal have been mostly used to decant and pour wine. These days however manufacturers have created lead free crystal glasses that are used in a modern wine decanter which is perfect to store your favorite beverage for more than one day in it, without any dangers or lead poisoning. This expands greatly on the purpose of the piece as it was traditionally known.
The Bohemia crystal decanter is considered a classic when it comes to crystal decanter pieces. For example the Savoy 24 ounce is a collectible item and currently has a nice discount at Amazon.

displaying a decanter set and other liquor q's?
i just bought my first place and want to display a cool decanter set complete with a nice glasses set (wine glasses, high ball glasses, etc) i bought but not sure what type of furniture these things should go on.
BQ: i am not a big drinker at all, except mixed drinks (no beer). is there some type of liquor or other liquid i could keep in my decanter set for when company comes over (which is rare) that won't spoil or something? ty.
If the decanter has any lead content at all (it would be on the label, such as 25% lead crystal), do not use it to store any liquor as the lead will leach into the alcohol. Keep your liquor or wine stored properly and use the decanter only when you have company, as that short amount of time will be safe. Decanter sets go on a buffet or sideboard, or in a china closet. If you have none of these, install a shelf (the kind w. hidden attachment is nice) and use that for your display. You can also replace the wood insert on one kitchen cabinet w. glass to use for your set.
