Wooden swingset on grass versus wood chips?
We bought my son (2) a wooden swing/play set. I have seen these set up on both grass and also wood chips. I would like opinions on which is preferable and why. Also if you think wood chips are the way to go, do you have information on what I need to do to make a wood chip area (I have a lawn) and also is it uncomfortable for bare feet? With grass, would I need to treat the wood with something special since sprinklers would be hitting it every day (the wood has been 'stained' already)? Thanks everyone!
If you decide to build it on the lawn here are a few possitive and negative's.
(POS)lawn will help to cushion a fall if it happens.
(NEG)Lawn will also leave a green color on the shoes and sandals/ flip flops that can be transfered into the carpet in the home.
(NEG)The lawn will take a beating under the swings set that may make it hard to maintain in a healthy green status. because of all of the compaction by the kids playing arounsd the swing set.
(pos)Lawn will cool down the area tempreture wise so that it seems alot cooler for the kids to play
(NEG) it will make it more difficult to mow the grass with the swing set in the way. when you weed whip the grass around the wooden supports of the swing set, the whip will eventually dig into the wood supports, causing them to suffer a little damage every season.
I come from a background of 30 years in the commercial and residential landscape industry just to qualify my answer here.
Bark positive and negatives:
(POS)Using the correct size of bark 1/2" to 3/4" in size would be the correct size to install under a wooden swing set.If you go this way I would suggest that you dig out at least 6" to 10"of soil to replace with at least 10"" of bark to aid in buffeting any chance of the kids falling off of the swings or from the top of the swing set. don't worry at allabout any bugs coming into the bark as there are far more bugs in lawn that in bark play grounds, besides we all have ants in bark and grass depending on where you live.
(NEG) bark does get thrown out of place when in a play ground area, and though it is not a lot of work to maintain it , many folks seem to be on the lazy side with the hustle and bustle of todays living.
If you want to take up parts of your lawn to make a bark area for the swing set, it is rather easy.
First cap off and lawn spray heads in the proposed area, but make sure to not take away a head that will still be active in maintaing the lawn. This can be acomplished ez by just changing out a nozzel, for instance if your lawn head has a full (360 degree nozzel) by a half nozzel or a quarter nozzel. Better yet rain birs suppliers have a universal nozzel for about a $1.89 that can be a full nozzel or any other spray pattern that you will need. check with your local casa depot or what ever and they can show you these nozzels and how to work them.
You have to be careful when you excavate for the new bark area so that you don;t hit a bunch of pvc lines in the process.(hopefully you installed the irr. sustem and you remember where they are more or less. If you think that a mail line runs through the area you want to excavate, be sure to shut the water off so that if you brake it you won't have a mud hole. Always check out the sytem before you cover up any pipes or piping so that you don;t have to remove the bark and try a repair then.
As a rule of thumb you should have a clear area of at least 5' on every side of the play set so that the kids don't end up falling onto a rose bush or some hard object.
You can place a wooden border around the bark play area to help control the bark from being kicked around. Use 2x4 pressure treated wood for this aplication because it will last alot longer being buried in the soil.
